| 梅花開了! Prunus mume in Bloom! |
Prunus mume is the national flower of China, the earliest to bloom in the spring, even in winter,
symbolize the perseverance. It is also my name. I have been looking to collect it for a long time.
Not until 200l a friend gave me 2 seedlings. One grew well in the west yard and started to grow
light pink single petal flowers, one did not survive in the east yard. I bought in Edison a small Mei
intended for BonTzai and planted in west yard in 2003. It has been blooming double pink steadily
each year, better and better. The third one I bought from Rutgers Garden, the leftover from 2008
NJ Garden Show, protected in their greenhouse and toughened up outside for transplant. It has
been blooming double pink for two years. This year it is blooming even on the small spikes from the
trunk. As a friend who makes the preserved Mei fruit each year, perceives each bud as a fruit. He
is estimating, how many bottle he will need for this year's production, as Xmas gifts for his friends.
The same friend gave me two white flower-red centered seedling also indirectly two deep red
seedlings last year. Two 6-yr-old mei from a friend in Pennsylvania is now blooming in the east
yeard, One more plant is from a friend who told me to scatter scores of fruits in the yard. So I
have total of 10 P. mume plants now. Five is blooming and five more is waiting.

Last year, I was surprised by many triplet fruits were there. This picture gives the answer. You can clearly see there are three stigma, 3
yellow green ball-like head for pollen to land on and for the latter to germinate and grow the pollen tube inside the style into the carpel,
which is separate, hence the triplet fruit. To my friend who is counting buds as fruits to harvest, I'd say you underestimated 3 folds.

This observation reminded me of "摽有梅,其實三兮".Though of totally different meaning. The
quote from Book of Songs has different interpretations itself.
