Autumn in New Jersey
The state of New Jersey is higher in the North west and lower in the coastal area. North of  and along
Highway 22, there is a drop of  200 to 300 feet. Along this hill provided great vista and was the target of
searching for the autumn in New Jersey. Three areas were visited: 1) Washington Rock state park. 2)
Watchung Reserve and 3)911 Memorial Park in West Orange.

1) Washington Rock State Park. The strategic location of Washington Rock made it a valuable lookout point
during the American Revolution for General George Washington in June of 1777 when the British army under
General William Howe was moving toward Westfield. From the vantage point of this natural rock
outcropping, General Washington had a thirty-mile panoramic view of the valley and was able to instruct his
troops to circle behind Howe’s troops and cut off their retreat.

One of the oldest state parks in New Jersey, Washington Rock was originally purchased in 1913 to
commemorate the historical events of 1777. Situated on top of Watchung Mountain in Green Brook Township,
the park is best known for its scenic vista and historical significance. The park is a popular site for picnicking
and relaxing.

2)The Watchung Reservation, a 2,065-acre preserve containing woodlands, fields, lakes, streams and more than 13
miles of hiking trails. Watchung Reservation is the largest park in Union County, New Jersey, United States. It is
bounded by the city of Summit, the borough of Mountainside, the townships of Berkeley Heights, Scotch Plains, and
Springfield. The reservation consists mainly of the upper valley of Blue Brook, between the ridges of First Watchung
Mountain and Second Watchung Mountain. A dam near the headwaters of the creek creates Lake Surprise.

The 20 ft female Gingko is straggly compare to her male counterparts. The fleshy fruit will mature and drop later in
fall the hard seed shell and the edible seed can be picked up.
Eagle Rock Reservation is a 408.33-acre tract of wooded land located in the central section of Essex County on the
crest of Watchung's First Mountain.  The mountain got its name in the early 19th century, when bald eagles were said
to nest in the rocky cliffs on the eastern edge.  The reservation is primarily undeveloped, and is laced with bridle
paths and hiking trails.  Lookout Point provides visitors with a spectacular view of the New York skyline.

This building is a very nice restaurant and caterer with dinning with the great NYC skyline. Take a look.
A historic structure that sat on the crest is the old casino built in 1911.  This was an open masonry shelter with a series
of arches.  It has since been transformed into the Highlawn Pavilion restaurant.  This saved the structure, which had
been subject to vandalism and slated for demolition.  (The term "casino" refers to an Italian style county dwelling or
summer house.)

Newest addition of the 911 memorial, an iron from the World Trade
Center. Normally Iris bloom in May and June. This is a sepcial
variety that blooms in Autumn.
