Mongaup Valley Wildlife Management Area and Bethel, NY
|
Since we missed the concert site in Woodstock in the Catskill, so we decided to pay Bethel, NY a visit. Mongaup
Valley Wildlife Management Area is a well known site of winter Bald Eagle watch, and it is on the way to Bethel, so
we decided to make a scouting visit. Hopefully to catch a little fall color as a bonus.
From Interstate 287 then Hwy 23, through New Jersey's High Point State Park, follow Hwy 42 north. From Rio go
west toward Rio River then follow the road along the lake. Near Forestburg, connect to Hwy 43 and visited the
Eagle watching blind. Further west, connected to Hwy 55 north to 17B west then reach Bethel.

The 1969 the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, took place in Bethel on this dairy farm. Now it is managed by Bethel
Woods Center for the arts. It has a museum preserving the history of this event. The event took place from August 15 to
18, had 400,000 participants. Yet it was orderly with minimum accidents, however the traffic jam was very bad. Each
day had around a dozen groups of artists performing, some with themes of Anti-war.
The smaller flat area on the left was where the stage was, the slope is where audience sat. The building on far right is the
museum.
