Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge
Bombay Hook NWR was established in 1937 as a primary refuge and breeding ground for migrating birds. It's 16,000
acres are mostly unaltered tidal salt marsh. It also has 1,100 acres of fresh water pools and 1,800acres of agricultural
fields, grassland and woodlands. A 12-mile round trip auto tour route and five natural trials provide opportunities to
observe and photograph wildlife. The following pictures were taken mostly from the car.
An Eastern King bird rested on the sign
along the auto route.
Is this Northern Leopard
Frog? or American
toad?
Black-necked Stilt. One
pair of bird watchers
came from New York,
the sole purpose is to
see this bird.
Black bellied plover and
Dowitchers.
Great Blue Heron are in their breeding
plumage.
A Red-winged Black bird.
Lesser Yellow Leg
Snipes. What long
beaks they have!
He checks out the
surrounding, before he
starts to eat.
He is enjoying his
dinner now.

This is a young bald
eagle, not quite 5 years
old, for its head and
legs are just to turn
white and back has
white spots. They molt
into adult plumage at
about five years of age.

Fresh water pools were
visited by shore bird.
Often you'd see lifting
off of the shore birds
as a moving patch of glit
tering white or silver
depending how the
light hits.
Black Bellied Plover and
Shore birds
Mallards.
Snowy Eggrets mom and
baby.
A Bald Eagle caught his prey.

He carried it away some 20 yards.
