Bombay Hook National Wildlife Reserve
Smyrna, DE 19977
Although I have only visited a few times, but every time is well rewarded. One time we saw
thousands of Snow Geese, (http://mayleesart.com/SnowGeese.html) Another time we saw a
young Bald Eagle captured a duck.(http://mayleesart.com/BombayHook.html). On August 16, 2010
wading birds are most prevalent. Butterflies and Fiddler Crabs are also very active.

Thistles are in bloom, they attract Black Swallowtail Butterflies. This one has been through a lot,
the hind wings were broken.
Two flocked to one Thistle flower. The upper one shows its ventral (belly) side of the wings, while
the lower on shows the dorsal(back) side of the wings. They are the same species.
A Buckeye.
When you get close to any mud flat, you will see
swarms of Fiddler Crabs running for shelter. They
have one of the two front claws much better
developed than the other. In the sun, the bigger
claw resembles a fiddle, hence the name.
Mid August is the migration season for egrets, Great
and snow egrets. Mixed with them are the black glossy
Ibis.
There are lots of fish in the water....
Egrets are taking their fiesta on the trees.

yellow beak, black legs.
Left and below are
Snow Egrets-Black beaks,
often yellow toes smaller than
Great Egrets.

Black-necked Stilt
I met people came from NYC specifically to see the Black-necked Stilts. I have not seen them in New Jersey.
Another Black-necked Stilt came join in.
So did a Short-billed Dowitcher.
American Avocet in winter
plumage already. During
March to August it has a
buffy head and neck.

Greetings!
Great Blue Heron, How can
we miss him. Though this
was not a particularly hot
day, but he acted like the
heat wave still on.
