Landmark Chimney
Rock is just behind the
visitor Center.
Pedernal Mountain in
the back appeared in
many of O'keeffe's
paintings.
Cow skull became
Ghost Ranch's symbol,
after O'keeffe gave a
painting of skull to the
Ranch.
The paleontology and anthropology museum in Ghost Ranch is housed in a Pueblo house. It is a flat roof, thick-walled
building with the wall absorb the heat during the day and release it at night. There is a center post supporting the roof,
The ceiling is constructed with large logs, radially supported by the wall and the center post, smaller branches are laid
on top these logs,There mush be a layer of impervious layer on top. There are drain spouts extruding the wall.
Indians lived in Ghost Ranch thousands of
years ago. The pots they made were beautiful.
Last shot of Ghost
Ranch, before leaving
Ghost Ranch.
South West of Ghost
ranch is Abiquiu Dam.
Perhaps this is the
source of irrigation
water for Ghost Ranch.
Echo Amphitheater is about 5 miles north of Ghost Ranch, To me it looks like a volcano crater, with half of it blown off.
However the rocks formations around are beautiful. It has layers of gray, yellow, white and red, the most brilliant red in
the right light. The echo is an obvious reverberation. Looking up from two thirds down the crater is quite different.
East wing 1. The rock
formation continued SE
of the Amphitheater.
East wing 2. The extension of East wing 1,
The part resisted weathering uniformly.
West wing 1. The
brilliant red rock is very
impressive.
Looking up from near
the center of the crater.
I saw Gray-headed
Juncos in the grounds
here, but not south of
here.
From Santa Fe take Hwy 84 north to Arbiquiu, follow the Highway that thread through the city and Keep north, you will
reach Ghost Ranch Conference Center. Just before the Ghost Ranch, the hills on the right became red cliffs with
different results of weathering. It is a very distinct and inspiring topography. No wonder Georgia O'keeffe fell in love
with it as early as 1917 and made it her summer home in 1934. She finally bought seven acres and a house in the
Ghost Range in the 50s, Her works inspired by the landscapes are so colorful and inspiring.
In front of the visitor
center, Gray-headed
Junko visited the feeder.
Other visitors were
Dark-eyed Junco and
Black-capped
Chichadee.
This is a bright afternoon
The dark marking is
about at the center of
the curved wall, roughly
due north, the eastwing
is clearly over exposed,
while the shadowed west
wing is just about right. I
needed a few days to
get used to the
brightness of New
Mexico sun.
