Gros Morne National Park is located on the west coast of Newfoundland. The glacier carved several large fjords
westward towards the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The two-armed Bonne Bay is an example. The Trout River Pond and the
Western Brook Pond had two much deposit at the opening and became fresh water lake now. Bonne Bay devided
the park into South and North two parts. South part was famous for the Tablelands, while the north has many scenic
and geological interests. Our first day was spent in the south part, starting with a boat tour onTrout River Pond. The
second day in the north highlighted with Green Point and the boat tour in Western Brook Pond. Gros Morne has
been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its Geological wonders since 1986.

Trout River Pond Boat Ride: It was a cloudy day,7/20/05.The north shore are Tablelands,The south shore is
metamorphic. The Tablelands were the mantle beneath the ocean floor got pushed up during the collision of North
America and Eurasia 450 million years ago. Its mineral content, high in iron, magnesium and chromium is not
conducive to plant growth. Few plants can grow here extremely slowly. Many trees are not knee high after 300 years
growth. This is a typical tableland, flat top, orange-brown and sparsely grown.
A female and later a male moose were sighted.
Green Point -The fossils here gave evidence that the divide between two sedimentary layers to the world geologists.
In 2000, the global stratotype for the boundary between the Cambrian and Ordovician periods was designated at
Green Point by the International Commission on Stratigraphy.
Green Point is beautiful too. Bunchberries are about to be picked for pies; The Balsam fir is so luscious.
Buttercups surrounds the driftwood; Rocks talk to each other.
Berry Hill Head Pond Trial: A morning walk on the boardwalk around the pond is refreshing. We saw a moose, and
many beautiful wildflowers: White Bog Orchis, Blue Flag Iris, bunchberries, etc, they will be in the Wildflower page.
Western Pond Brook: An ancient fjord with deposits closed off the opening forming a 12 mile long lake, lined with
2000 Feet Cliffs towering in front of the water. The moving ice carved out a U shaped valley with tributaries also
U-shaped, coming down from the distant higher valley to the main glacier. The rocks have distinctive character are
majestic and very impressive. Above the Plateaus are lakes they send streams of water down from the top sometime
flying freely. The two hour boat ride is certainly worth the hour walk to the dock, besides the wildflowers along were
fantastic. Large purple fringed orchid, swamp milkweed, bladder wort, cotton weed, White bog Orchid and others
were shown on the wildflower page.
One interesting fact is that I have not observed any conifers in the valley of Western Brook Pond.
At Lobster Cove Head, the migrating song birds were netted and banded as record of population studies. Here's a
Blackpoll Warbler being released after banding.
From Norris Point, on a good day , TableMountain can be viewed from the first parking lot entering to town. Here
you can see some residual snow on the mountain top and clear erosion lines on this barren plateau.
