Grand Canyon of Yellowstone National Park
The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone is just  south of the eastern connection of the north and south Grand Loop Road. It can be accessed by North Rim
Drive and South Rim Drive. The North Rim Drive was under repair, except an access to the Upper Falls, the rest of the north rim view points, such as
Grandview Point and Inspiration Point are not reachable. On the south rim, besides two view points to the upper falls(109 ft drop), Uncle Tom's trail's
328 steps of steel ladder brings you down 3/4 way to canyon bottom to see the 308 ft drop of Lower Falls. Coming up, frequent rest is recommended.

Further north about 5 more minutes drive, Artists Point gives you a wonderful view of the Lower Falls(308ft, 93m) and the grand coloration on the cliff
wall, which was caused by hot water acting on volcanic rock.

The Grand Canyon is 20 miles long, 800 to 1200 fr deep and 1,500 to 4,000 ft wide. About 640,000 years ago, a huge volcanic eruption occurred in
Yellowstone, emptyig a large underground chamber of magma. Volcanic debris spread for thousands of miles i a matter of minutes. The roof of this
chamber collapsed, forming a giant caldera, 10 miles bigger than the lower half of the Grand Loop Drive(30X 45 miles)Eventually the caldera was
filled with lava. The Canyon Rhyolite lava flow covered what is now the canyon area approximately  480,000 years ago.
Upper Falls- South end of the canyon.
Lodgepole Pine covers 60% of the park and makes up 80% of park forest. It is the most important tree in the Rockies and the Black HIlls area.
The spray from the falls made the wall moist, hence the moss grows.

Lower Falls
Golden
rocks.
Yellow, brown and orange colored lichens.
I wonder if this is native American peony.
Artist Point Two miles further Northeast of the South Rim Drive are several overlooks of the canyon. The Lower Falls in flowing down at a
distance. The Yellowstone River meanders through the slopping cliffs. The most amazing is the coloration of this section of the canyon wall, in
such pattern, not seen anywhere else.
Slightly pass the Artist Point, looking down stream, no colorful cliffs beyond.
About .25 miles beyond the trail head to Lily Pad Lake, The coloration is just fantastic. Just beyond the four pines, looking back toward south,,,,,,
.....This is what you'll see. I can't wait to splash my rice paper and let it drip.....
